For a Blessed New Year

DEAR FRIEND,

The year is just ending. It was a fine year with many blessings from God, lot of love shared, lot of lives touched, lot of challenges faced, graces and gifts shared. And lots of sorrows, too, however, gifts fom God..

We shall kneel before the Almighty Father who has led us through each day to Jesus who walked with us as Emmanuel and to the Spirit who put thoughts and words and inspirations into our hearts.
WELCOME to the New Year which is His precious gift to us. May God be with you in this New year. He has opened a new account for us with a huge opening balance of love, compassion and care. We shall draw freely and spend lavishly on all those who come into our lives in 2010.

We do not know what all things are in store for us in the New Year. But we believe that God, the author of the Universe knows whatever will happen to the Universe as a whole and to us puny little humans in particular. But we believe in what St. Paul said: “Everything works for good for them that trust in God” (Rom. 8: 28).

With this faith let us face 2010 boldly and with great enthusiasm and expectations.

warm regards
Dn.Aji George, Rome

Sheikh and Rajappan

A Sheikh was admitted at the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai for a heart transplant, but prior to the surgery the doctors  needed to store his blood in case the need arises. As the gentleman had a rare type of blood, it couldn't be found locally. So the call went out to a number of  countries.

Finally a malayalee named Rajappan
Trichur , Kerala was located who had a similar type of blood.
Rajappan willingly donated his blood for the Sheikh. After the surgery, the Sheikh sent Rajappan as appreciation for giving his blood, a new Toyota Prado, diamonds, lapiz lazuri jewellery, and a Million Dinars.

Once again the Sheikh had to go through a corrective surgery. His doctor telephoned Rajappan who was more than happy to donate his blood again.

After the second surgery, the Sheikh sent Rajappan a thank you card and a jar of Almond halwa sweets.

Rajappan was shocked to see that the Sheikh this time did not reciprocate Rajappan's kind gesture as he had anticipated.

He phoned the Sheikh and said "This time also I thought that you would give me Toyota Prado, Diamonds and Jewellery... .
But you gave only a thank you card and a jar of Almond sweets.

At this the Sheikh replied:

" Mone Rajappa...now I have a malayalee's blood in my veins!"

Christmas Message 2009

 Die Heiligen Drei Könige

Sie frugen in jedem
Städtchen: 'Wo geht der Weg
nach Bethlehem , ihr lieben
Buben und Mädchen?' Die
Jungen und Alten , sie
wussten es nicht , die Könige
zogen weiter , sie folgten
einem goldenem Stern , der
leuchtete lieblich und heiter.
Der Stern bleibt stehen über
Josefs Haus , da sind sie hin
eingegangen; das Öchslein
brüllt , das Kindlein schrie ,
die heiligen Drei Könige
sangen.

Pastoral message of the month - December 2009

Holy Night, but a Silent Night?

In the year 1818, on the eve of the Christmas day, a song heard for the first time in St. Nicholas church, a village church in Oberndorf, near Salzburg, Austria. The assistant priest Rev. Fr. Joseph Mohr and the choir director Franz Xaver Gruber composed a song and sung with the accompaniment of Fr. Mohr’s guitar. There comes into bloom an ever-green carol song, “Silent Night Holy Night” (Stille Nacht Heilige Nacht), which still stands the best amidst the test of the times.

On that “Holy Night” the Son of God incarnated for the human liberation from clutches of bondages, however, was that night really “Silent Night”? On that night when Christ came down from heaven to earth, the soldiers were running to behead the young babes, while the shepherds were running to kneel down at the manger. On that night, the cries of mothers were echoing around the manger seeing the blood of their babes, on other side the king’s patience was running out due to the birth of the King of Kings.

Today’s night too, not that silent still, as it was in 2000 years ago. The cries of natural world due to heavy misuse of resources are at its zenith, the cries of starving millions, including babes are too in its heights, due to lack of living avenues. Millions of people are still running, some to save their lives from the destructive forces and destructive weapons, others to meet their both ends and some to grab other’s fortunes to amass wealth. The “cries and runnings” are still flowing without any stubborn hindrance.

We have come to a juncture, to re-think ourselves in order to qualify our Christian lives in the midst of life-threatening structures of today. The pertinent question I would like to ask in this context is: Can we pose for a moment to have a deliberate thinking over the “Cries and Running” which break the “Silence” amidst “Holiness”? Can we ponder over Christian values in order to bring its essence for wiping out “Cries and Running”?  Can we post Christian Praxis in our lives to transform “Cries and Running” to “Happiness and Peaceful Living”?

Youth, a vibrant age in our life time, has the strength to act as a catalyst to bring positive changes among the negative forces. Let this year’s “Holy Night” gives an impetus to you all to promote “changes in attitudes” in order to labor for fullness of other’s life too, for Christ’s incarnation rooted in “… have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). Let us strive hard in one accord to bring back that “Celebration of Life” in the Eden Gardens to this Earth Gardens. Let me conclude with Mor Ephrem’s prayer from Hymns on the Nativity 1:95. He sings,

On this day a gift came out to us without asking for it;
let us then give alms to those who cry out and beg from us.

With heartfelt wishes of a joyful and blessed “Holy Night”, let me sum up this “silent thought”.

Carol Service in Vienna (Day 1 - 05 Dec 2009)

On 5th December, 2009, on the eve of St. Nicholas Day, we have visited many of our houses in Veinna singing Christmas Carol Songs, giving special gifts, conveying Christmas Greetings etc. Our Christmas carol reflects the very popular Malankara tradition (Kerala, India) where Carol bands are visiting all the houses with different musical instruments on the Christmas Eve. It was in last year that we have started  the Christmas Carol Service here in Vienna which was under the leadership of St.Mary's Malankara Syrian Orthodox Youth Association. That Carol Service was a great success and brought us a lot of appreciation. In this year, we are conducting our Carol Services both on 5th and 19th December, 2009. Last Saturday, we have covered most of the areas of Vienna City, and on 19th December, we are planning to visit the remaining houses in and outside Vienna. This year's Carol Service is a joint effort of the Managing Committee and the Youth Association of our Church and  that helped us to experience a magical team spirit which reflects  great warm and tender feelings of the youngsters as well as elders during the advent time because Joy of Carol knows no age limits. In order to create an intimate and happy atmosphere and to convey the message of Jesus's birth in different way, we have organized a competition for Christmas trees. This helped us to provide our Church members a lot of fun and quality time to prepare Christmas trees and to think about the baby Jesus' birth. Many of them decorated their houses with strings of lights, decorated Chrimas Trees, shining stars etc and many are in preparation. For them as well as for us, the spirit of Christmas has to light everyone's hearts and to bring a smile on their neighbour's faces.

Carol Service 2009 by Youth MSOC Switzerland

On Saturday, 5th December 2009, we had our Carol service in Switzerland. 3 years ago, our loving His Grace Theophilose Mar Kuriakose Thirumeni blessed us and gave us a good start for on the carol service and we are following it with all its values. Now our 4th Carol has been passed with great success like in the last years. We were 12 members from our Youth Association along with our leader Fr. Jomy Joseph, Benny uncle (Benny Kakkattu) and Anil uncle (Anil Korah).

Our Carol Service flagged off in Bern and continued our journey through Basel, Luzern, Frauenfeld till Zürich. All of us were treated with very delicious food and responses in every house we visited. We, The Syrian Orthodox Youth Switzerland are really thankful to Mr. Benny Kakkattu and Mr. Anil Korah for their great support and help which they have given us on this day and of course for our Vicar Fr. Jomy Joseph for all his support and guidance. A big Thanks deserves Master Christopher Padickakudy and Master Naveen Palamootil for being our Santa Claus. They did a great job as well. All together we had again an unforgettable Weekend. Last but not the least all the Youth members would like to appreciate the hard work of our Youth Committee Members Secretary Miss Jasmine Mathew, Treasurer Mr. Jeevan Mathew and PRO Miss. Tijitha Mathew. Hats off to you guys!!!! Looking forward to our next Carol...
