Theological forum of St. Mary’s MSO Church, Vienna

With a view to educate and practice theological aspects of the Syrian Orthodox Church as also to provide opportunity for the members to partake and sermonize the Gospel, a “Theological Forum”  of the St. Mary’s Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church, Vienna, was instituted in November 2008.  Under the leadership of the Vicar, Rev. Fr. Biju Parekkattil, the Forum meets once a month after the Holy Qurbana and a member by rotation used to speak on any theological subject and the Vicar makes in-depth analysis on various facets of the Church.

Following the practice, this month’s meeting was organized on Sunday, the 25th of April 2010 at St. Mary’s MSO Church, Lainzerstrasse 154 A, Vienna and Mr. Ouseph Padickakudi, a parishioner, delivered the message to the forum on the following topic: “The relevance of the Faith of Abraham in our day-to-day life”

Mr. Padickakudi asserted the need of obedience with firm belief that He, our Lord God, would help and rescue them those who really depend upon Him and trust in Him.  He further wished that let our faith in God help us for such an accurate, timely, and speedy decision making and to lead our life unchallenged by the tribulations of the world.

Most of the parish members attended the forum meeting who found it was virtually a Christian fellowship that would enable spiritual revival.

Wie finde ich meine Identität?

„Es steckt in uns eine Ursehnsucht, wer zu sein. Wir möchten zu uns selbst kommen. Als der Neutestamentler Heinrich Schlier vor Jahren starb, fand man in seiner Rocktasche ein Gedicht aus der letzten Zeit seines Lebens: „Was bin ich?" - Von Dietrich Bonhoeffer gibt es ein ähnliches Gedicht, auch dies kurz vor dem Tod geschrieben, in der Haft: „Wer bin ich?" Bei beiden geht durch alle Zeilen das Suchen nach einer christlichen Antwort auf diese Lebens- und Sterbensfrage. 

Wie komme ich zu mir selbst? Wie finde ich meine Identität? - Diese Frage, das ist eine Grundaussage des Glaubens, kann ich nicht mit mir selbst beantworten. Ich kann nicht allein zu mir selbst finden. Mit großer Selbstverwirklichung ist es nicht getan. Der Grund meines Lebens liegt nicht in mir selbst. „Du wärest bald am Ende mit mir, wenn ich nicht eins wäre mit dem, der keine Grenzen kennt" (P.Claudel, Der seidene Schuh). Wer durch sein eigens Tun, durch seine moralischen Anstrengungen oder durch welche Eigenleistung auch immer zu sich selbst kommen und also den Sinn seines Daseins selbst produzieren will, verfällt in eine einzige Lebenslüge. Er verkennt ganz einfach die eigenen Gegebenheiten. Er setzt sich unter den Druck, nicht nur etwas, sondern sich selbst produzieren zu müssen. Genau das ist es, was vor allem der Apostel Paulus „Sünde" und „Tod" nennt. Wer sich selbst produzieren will verliert sich selbst (vgl. Mt 16,25). So gerade betrügt er sich um seine Würde, die er allein seinem Schöpfer und Erlöser verdankt. Diese Würde kann durch keine menschliche Tat überboten und durch keine Untat zerstört werden.
Heinrich Spaemann gibt folgende geistliche Schriftauslegung: Jesus sagt in den Evangelien häufiger, vor allem nach Johannes: „ego eimi" - ich bin, ich bin es. Der geheilte Blinde (Joh 9) bekommt mit seinen geöffneten Augen Jesus in den Blick. Als nun die Leute ihn bestürmen, ob er es wirklich ist, der früher als Blinder dagesessen hat antwortet er: „ego eimi" - ich bin es (wie Jesus es sagt). Durch Jesus hat er seine Identität gefunden. Vorher war er wie ein lebendiger Opferstock, in den die Leute Münzen werfen - ohne Gesicht, ohne „Ansehen". Und nun hat Jesus ihn angesehen und ihm ein neues Ansehen gegeben. Als Petrus bei der Verleugnung Jesus aus dem Blick verliert („Ich kenne den Menschen nicht"), da sagt er: „ouk eimi" - ich bin es nicht. Er hat seine Identität verloren, weil er Jesus aus dem Blick verloren hat. Und erst der Blick Jesu muss ihn wieder zu sich selbst zurückführen: „Und der Herr wandte sich um und sah Petrus an" (Lk. 22,61).

 Trotz allem Dunklen in mir und durch es hindurch sagt Gott ja zu mir und vertraut mir an, was ihm wichtig ist. Weil er mich anschaut, kann ich ihn in den Blick nehmen. Weil ich das Ansehen Gottes genieße, kann ich leben, ohne mich zu überfordern oder mich selbst zu verachten. So münden beide oben genannten Gedicht in die Sätze: „Was bin ich? Gott sieht mich. Ich bin sein Augenblick" (Schlier). „Wer ich auch bin, du kennst mich dein bin ich o Gott" (Bonhoeffer).
 Amor, ergo sum! Ich bin geliebt, also bin ich. Das ist die Möglichkeit, meine Identität zu finden.

Carol Service in Vienna (Day 1 - 05 Dec 2009)

On 5th December, 2009, on the eve of St. Nicholas Day, we have visited many of our houses in Veinna singing Christmas Carol Songs, giving special gifts, conveying Christmas Greetings etc. Our Christmas carol reflects the very popular Malankara tradition (Kerala, India) where Carol bands are visiting all the houses with different musical instruments on the Christmas Eve. It was in last year that we have started  the Christmas Carol Service here in Vienna which was under the leadership of St.Mary's Malankara Syrian Orthodox Youth Association. That Carol Service was a great success and brought us a lot of appreciation. In this year, we are conducting our Carol Services both on 5th and 19th December, 2009. Last Saturday, we have covered most of the areas of Vienna City, and on 19th December, we are planning to visit the remaining houses in and outside Vienna. This year's Carol Service is a joint effort of the Managing Committee and the Youth Association of our Church and  that helped us to experience a magical team spirit which reflects  great warm and tender feelings of the youngsters as well as elders during the advent time because Joy of Carol knows no age limits. In order to create an intimate and happy atmosphere and to convey the message of Jesus's birth in different way, we have organized a competition for Christmas trees. This helped us to provide our Church members a lot of fun and quality time to prepare Christmas trees and to think about the baby Jesus' birth. Many of them decorated their houses with strings of lights, decorated Chrimas Trees, shining stars etc and many are in preparation. For them as well as for us, the spirit of Christmas has to light everyone's hearts and to bring a smile on their neighbour's faces.
