One day retreat on 06 Mar 2010 by Vanitha Samajam, St. Marys MSOC Vienna

Following the practice, one-day retreat was organized by the Vanitha Samajam of the St. Mary’s Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church, Vienna during 2010 Great Lent period also. It was held on Saturday, the 6th of March 2010 at St. Mary’s MSO Church, Vienna, under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Biju Parekkattil, Vicar of the Church, and Rev. Fr. Prince Paulose, a veteran theologian and a doctorate scholar based in Rome, Italy.

Rev. Fr. Biju Parekkattil asserted the need of repentance with firm belief that He the Jesus Christ would pardon and wash away the sins of those who really repent and come forth unto Him.  Rev. Fr. Biju further wished and prayed that let the Great Lent period be a raison d'être for such a repentance, reversal and U-turn.

The main topic of Rev. Fr. Prince Paulose was the importance and necessities of keeping own home as a role-model of real Christian life and becoming more subservient to the Almighty.  He pointed out that deterioration and diminution of peace and happiness in every home are increasing in this modern world. Rev. Fr. Prince spotted out that lack of tolerance and forbearance are the main causes of conflict and the repercussions of such conflicts within home are innumerable and would be enduring as it would adversely influence the children.  He reminded one and all that the present generation has a duty to shape up spiritually healthy future generation in leading peaceful and joyful life.

Most of the parish members attended the retreat who found it was virtually a Christian fellowship that would enable spiritual revival.

Mid-Lent and Feast of Holy Cross (phelgo d-sawmo)

The Wednesday of the fourth week of the fast marks the middle of the Lent (phelgo d-sawmo) and the Feast of the Holy Cross in our Syrian Orthodox Church. What is the significance and importance of the Mid-Lent? Why is our church celebrating it on the 4thWednesday during the Great Lent? On this day in middle of Great Lent, we celebrate the feast of the Holy Cross. As we all know, the New Testament is the display of the hidden truths of the Old Testament. In addition, we can see in the Old Testament many shadows of the events of the New Testament. For example, the sacrifice of Isaac on Mount Moriah is considered to be the shadow of the sacrifice on Mount Calvary. Jesus is the only One Who came down from heaven and knows what transpired there.

According to today's Bible readings, the Israelites, led by Moses, were on their way to the Promised Land. When they had no water to drink or bread to eat, they fought against God and His servant Moses. But because of Moses’ prayers and intercessions, God blessed the Israelites with Manna and Birds’ meat. Despite being provided adequate food, they continued to speak against God. When Moses had to stay with God for 40 days on top of the mountain, the Israelites became impatient, said bad things about Moses, and started to discredit God’s name. They gathered their gold ornaments and made a golden calf, making it their object of worship. The Lord God become very angry and sent fiery serpents, biting the Israelites; many of them died. Terrified at God’s vengeance, they came to Moses and said; we have sinned and spoken against the Lord, and pleaded with him to pray to the Lord so that the serpents will be taken away from them. Moses prayed for the people, and God said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent and set it upon a pole, and anyone who has been bitten can look at it and shall live". According to God's command, Moses made a brass serpent, put it upon a pole, and all those who looked at it were saved. Indeed, Moses' golden serpent was a symbol of Christ's cross.

On this day, according to our faith, we erect the "N'ortho", which identifies Golgotha in the middle of the church, so that all who come inside the church could meditate on the Cross, the symbol of Christ’s crucifixion and death. It is believed that Jesus Christ was crucified at the very center of earth so that everybody could see what He did so that we might be saved. When we look at the cross, we get cured from all our spiritual illnesses.

During the middle of Holy Qurbana,  priest takes the cross from the "N'ortho" and brings it up to the altar. There will be a special service to celebrate the elevation of the Holy Cross. The adoration of the Cross in the middle of Great Lent is to remind the faithful in advance of the Crucifixion of Christ. The passages read this day repeat the calling of the Christian by Christ to dedicate his life, for "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me (Christ)" (v. 34-35). This verse clearly indicates the kind of dedication which is needed by the Christian in three steps: To renounce his arrogance and disobedience to God's Plan, To lift up his personal cross (the difficulties of life) with patience, faith and the full acceptance of the Will of God without complaint that the burden is too heavy; having denied himself and lifted up his cross leads him to the, Decision to follow Christ.

These three voluntary steps are three links which cannot be separated from each other, because the main power to accomplish them is the Grace of God, which man always invokes. The Adoration of the Cross is expressed by the faithful through prayer, fasting, almsgiving and the forgiveness of the trespasses of others. On this Wednesday the Adoration of the Cross is commemorated with a special service following the Divine Liturgy in which the significance of the Cross is that it leads to the Resurrection of Christ.

The Bathtub Test

During a visit to the mental asylum, I asked the director how do you determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalized.

"Well," said the director, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub."

"Oh, I understand," I said. "A normal person would use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup."

"No." said the director, "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?"

ARE YOU GOING TO PASS THIS ON, OR DO YOU WANT THE BED NEXT TO MINE??

Letter to the God!

A little boy wanted Rs.50 ery badly and prayed for weeks, but nothing happened.

Finally he decided to write to God a letter requesting the Rs.50.

When the postal authorities received the letter addressed to God - INDIA , they decided to forward it to the President of the India as a joke.

The President was amused, but thought Rs.50 would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy, and he did not want to spoil the kid.
So he instructed his secretary to send the little boy Rs.30.

The little boy was delighted with Rs. 30, and decided to write a thank you note to God,
which read: "Dear God: Thank you very much for sending the money.. However, I noticed that  for some reason you had to sent it through the President's Office . . and as usual, those crooks deducted Rs.20 as tax"

It's Nimisha's Birthday...!!!!

On behalf of Youth - MSOCME, we wish our dearest Nimi a very very happy birthday.
As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.

The Feast of Mor Ephrem.

Syrian Orthodox Church commemorated Mor Ephrem last saturday,on the first saturday of the great Lent.
Mor Ephrem the Syrian, the great poet saint of the Syriac Church, was born in c. A.D. 306 in Nisibis (North-west of Mosul, Iraq). While some late sources claim that his father was a heathen priest who worshiped an idol called Abnil, his own writings affirm that he was raised in a Christian family. (Adv. Haereses, XXVI. "I was born in the way of truth: though my boyhood understood not the greatness of the benefit, I knew it when trial came." Again more explicitly, if we may trust a Confession which is extant only in Greek, "I had been early taught about Christ by my parents; they who begat me after the flesh, had trained me in the fear of the Lord... My parents were confessors before the judge: yea, I am the kindred of martyrs.")
He was ordained deacon in c. A.D. 338 and served the Bishop of Nisibis, Mor Ya`qub, who participated in the Synod of Nicaea (AD 325). He lived as a solitary and apparently never entered into priesthood. After the cession of Nisibis to Persia in AD 363, Ephrem withdrew into the Roman Empire and settled at Edessa where he composed the hymns that survive to this day. Though in the ecclesiastical hirearchy he was just a deacon, he is remembered as a great doctor of the universal Church.
Ephrem wrote exclusively in Syriac, the Edessene dialect of Aramaic, but his works were translated into Armenian and Greek, and via the latter into Latin and Slavonic. Many works in these languages attributed to him are, however, not genuine. Much of Ephrem's exegetical, dogmatic and ascetic works are in verse form. He wrote several polemical works refuting the heresies of Marcion, Bardaisan, Mani, the Arians and the Anomoeans. He wrote widely regarded biblical commentaries on Genesis and the Diatesseron. His writings extensively employ typology and symbolism. Over 500 genuine hymns survive, of great beauty and insight. His poetry is in two genres: madrãshe (hymns) and memre (verse homilies). After his death, the hymns were arranged into hymn cycles, the most famous of which are those on Faith (including the five 'On the Pearl'), on Paradise and on Nisibis (the second half of which is on the Descent of Christ into Hell). His liturgical poetry had a great influence on Syriac and Greek hymnography. Syriac churches honor him as 'the lyre of the Holy Spirit'.
Mor Ephrem departed to his heavenly abode on 9th of June, A.D. 373. His memory is commemorated in the Syriac Orthodox Church on the first Saturday of the Great Lent.

You need to join the Army of the Lord!

A friend was in front of me coming out of church one day, and the priest was standing at the door as he always is to shake hands. He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside.

The Priest said to him, "You need to join the Army of the Lord!"

My friend replied, "I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Father."

Priest questioned, "How come I don't see you except at Christmas and Easter?"

He whispered back, "I'm in the secret service."

PATRIARCHAL DAY

PATRIARCHAL DAY
Bar 'Eato Briro Dr. Babu Paul

February 22 is remembered by the church as the day of Peter establishing his throne in Antioch. The Roman Catholic Church also observes this day, of course without mentioning Antioch or Rome, as Cathedra Petri.

That Peter had a special place among disciples is beyond doubt. That it was he who confessed the faith is also undisputed. That he did that without realising the cost involved is also clear; that is why in the very breath after calling him Peter our Lord had to admonish him. That he disowned his Guru is accepted, but often we do not recall that it happened because he did not run away like the rest except of course John; his offence was one which could have been committed only by a disciple who was loyal and "foolhardy" if not brave. There is something of Peter in all of us.The greatest plus point of Peter is his willingness to allow Jesus to restore him to grace. Peter disowned and Judas betrayed, Peter was restored to primacy but Judas had to be replaced; the response to guilt was different and that made the difference. This grace is obvious in the case of Thomas also; how kindly Jesus treats his doubt; He invites Thomas to satisfy himself and that was enough for Thomas to say My Lord and My God, he did not any longer need to feel the wound physically.(Like the number of the Magi we just assume that Thomas satisfied himself by putting his hand in the wound etc. Bible does not say that, just as the Bible does not saythat there were THREE wise men). For Peter a look was enough. For Thomas an offer was enough. As the church remembers "Cathedra Petri" let us look into ourselves to identify the Peter in each of us, and ensure that we honour the Call each of us has received. The times when we have jumped into the sea moved by faith and the times when we began to sink for want of adequate faith. The times when we declared faith in the Son of God and the times when we tried to make God conform to our plan for Him(and consequently for us). The times when we were scared and/or ashamed to confess our linkage with Him and the times when He by a sad look transmitted in silence made us realise our folly thus inviting us to repent and be restored. The times when we in despair thought of returning to fishing for fish and the times when He waited on the shore with breakfast ready to make us fishers of men.Feb 22, as indeed any memory associated with Peter, should prompt us to introspect and depend on God to carry out any correction of the course of our life; Peter's is one of the most reassuring examples for ordinary mortals like us, falling and being helped by Him to rise again.

Secondly this feast should remind us of our faith. Faith of the fathers, as I explained last Sunday in Trivandrum church, is three dimensional as explained by Paul to the elders of Ephesus(Acts 20, cf. last Sunday's reading from Acts): the relationship with God(: 21 ), the realisation of my calling(: 24 ) and the responsibility for the neighbour(: 35 ). Everything else comes in the lower dimensions of faith, be it the canon of the Bible, or the perpetual virginity of the Theotokos, or the one-time baptism. Even lower in significance would fall the traditions of the church, administrative or ritualistic, and the more mundane aspects of church life. When we remember the establishment of the Petrine Throne we should not be carried away to uncharitable positions or untenable premises; on the other hand we should recall the faith of Peter, and Eudius, and Ignatius, and all the saintly souls who left for us their shining commitment to Christ.

Thirdly we should use this as a day to pray for the Patriarch, HH Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas. He is a man of prayer and a good soul. I should know: I have known him closely for almost a quarter century now, and HH has taken me in such confidence that I know more about his strengths AND weaknesses than any other Indian(!), it is not as if he is all virtue, he is a human being too, but a far better human being than most I have seen in 61+ years.Let us pray that HH be strengthened in his strong points, and supported in his weaknesses by the Holy Spirit.Every time I speak to Moran he, the head of my church and successor to St. Peter, asks me to pray for him; that is humility. We his followers should ensure that by our words and conduct we do not give the impression that our Patriarch is a selfseeking powerhungry ordinary man perched on an undeserving throne: we owe it to him, if we genuinely respect him. I do not know how many of us pray for him everyday. I do, and I hope that at least a few of those who read this would start the practice from this day on.

Let us pray for reinforcement of our faith, for resetting of priorities as Holy Spirit guides us, and for long life and happy times for our Patriarch. A celebration like the one at Manarcadu may be necessary to keep up the morale but if in the process we lose sight of the greater goals of the pilgrim church which is perennially on its march to the New Jerusalem Lord have mercy.

Condolences to the departed soul, Rev. Fr. Cherian Kottayil

Youth-MSOCME announces with profound regret and sadness the death of Rev Fr. Cherian Kottayil who passed away in a motor accident at Pandallam on 15th of February 2010. He was a priest of Kottayam Diocese of Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church. He was a gifted singer, blessed poet, writer, preacher and respected teacher of Holy Jacobite Syrian. He was Malpan of Rev.Fr.Biju.M.Parekkattil, Rev.Fr.Eldhose Vattaparambil, Rev.Fr.Jomy Joseph, Fr.Prince Paulose, Rev.Dn.Aji George and many other priests in Europe and other parts of the world.

We can compare Cherianachan to Harp of Perumpalli thirumeni. Fr. Cherian truly testified the compassion and love of our Lord Jesus Christ. Cherianachan was a priest who mostly stays behind the curtain, yet accomplishes great deeds for the growth of the Kingdom of God.
