Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Youth Association All India Camp

PERUMBAVOOR: Annual youth association camp concluded here at Thuruthiply St. Mary's JSO Church.

Camp started with the registration of the youth association members from different parts of India. Close to 600 members got registered. H.G Mor Irenios Paulose ( Kozhikode, Australia & New Zealand diocese & President of Youth Association) hoisted the flag which marked the official beginning of the camp. H.G Mor Irenios Paulose, H.G Mor Osthatheos Ishaq (Mylapore Diocese) & H. G Mor Barnabas Geevarghese lead the evening prayer held inside the church.

H.B Catholicos Dr. Baselios Thomas I inaugurated the camp during a public function held after the evening prayer. H.G Mor Gregorios Joseph (Kochi Diocese & Holy Synod secretary in India), H.G Dr. Mor Ivanios Mathews (Kandanad diocese), H.G Mor Osthatheos Ishaq, H.G Mor Barnabas Geevarghese (Spiritual organizations in India) blessed the occasion with their speeches. Mor Irenios presided over the meeting. Facilitation speeches were delivered by Church Vicar Rev Fr. Behnan Pathiyarath Parambil, Chevalier T.T Joy, K.J Reji & M.S Benny. Youth Association General Secretary Biju K Tampy delivered the vote of thanks. All the previous general Secretaries of the Youth Association was honoured during the meeting. Dinner break was followed by the ice breaking / introduction of camp members & Theme presentation by Mor Irenios.

Second day of the camp began with Morning prayer followed by Holy Mass. Main attractions of the second day was the retreat by H.G Dr. Mor Clemis Kuriakose, Study session by H.G Mor Osthatheos on Syriac Orthodox Heritage, Session by H.B Catholicos Dr. Baselios Thomas I & Leadership Skills training by Dr. JFP Siju Thottapilly. Second day
concluded with group discussion and the cultural program.

The camp concluded on 23rd May with camp members attending Holy Mass &  Pentecosty service which was lead by H.G Mor Irenios Paulose. The main attraction of the camp was that The President of the Youth Association H.G Mor Irenios Paulose was present from beginning to end of the camp.

One-day Seminar by Southern Zone of MGJSM on 24th April 2010

Southern Zone of  Mor Gregorios Jacobite Student Movement organizes a One-day Seminar on 24th April, 2010  from 7 am to 1. PM at Michael Mor Dionysius Dayara, Adoor.

 Mor Gregorios Jacobite Student Movement (MGJSM) is the official  Students organization of the Jacobite Syrian Church and was known prior to 1958 period as 'Mar Gregorios Syrian Vidhyarthi Sangam' or the 'Mar Gregorios Syrian Students Association' (MGSSA). This was the first students organization in the whole world that was named after St. Gregorios Chathuruthy- Parumala Thirumeni.   HG.Dr.Kuriakose Mor Theophilose Thirumeni ( President),  Rev. Fr. Bobby John ( General Secretary), Mr. Prasobh Reji (Joint Secretary and Special Coordinator-Thrissur, Malabar, Calicut region), Mr. Arun George (Joint Secretary), Mr. Jijo Thomas( Treasurer), Rev. Dn. Thomas Poothicote (Member & Special Coordinator -Kollam, Niranam, Thumpamon region), Rev. Dn. Eldho Raj (Committee Member), Rev. Dn. Shibu Paul(Committee Member), and Mr. Jerin Matthew (Committee Member) are the   Office-bearers of the Movement.

Inauguration of a New Congregation and New Youth Association Unit in Norway

Navajeevan Trust - Kottayam

Searching for an innovative way of spiritual orientation, Vienna St. Mary's MSO Youths visited Navajeevan Trust at Kottayam, Kerala on the day after Christmas, 26th December, 2009 and made an interview with Mr. P. U. Thomas, the founder of Navajeevan, and with many of his colleagues and volunteers of the trust. It provided us a golden chance to understand and to take part in their miraculous ministry of the social service following the words of Jesus Christ and helped us to broaden our vision of spirituality itself.

Navajeevan (the word means „New Life“), is a place for the destitute and mentally challenged, people. The ministry provides them with food, clothing accommodation and also provides support  to patients who are too poor to afford their hospital expenses. The Navajeevan Trust has been founded in 1990 and Mr. P.U. Thomas, a Class IV attendant of the Kottayam Medical College, is the  founder and main trustee of the trust.

Mr. P. U. Thomas (The man behind Navajeevan initiative)

Mr. P. U. Thomas, (known as Thomaschettan for the inhabitants and well-wishers of Navajeevan) is the eldest son of Mr. Oani and Mrs. Annamma and had been working as an attendant at the Kottayam Medical College since 1970. He understood the pathetic condition of the poor and the helpless in the Medical College when he was admitted there with a severe abdominal pain at the age of 18. In 1970 he became an attendant at Medical college Hospital Kottayam and it paved the way for him to serve the poor, needy and sick people. He set aside a sum of money for medicine, and food for the poor patients from his meagre amount of salary. Thomaschetten himself narrates the origin and development of his ministry as follows: "If I get a job in a medical college, I will do a lot of good things to the poor. This was my prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary. From 1970 January onwards I have been going to the hospital to visit and nurse the sick. I experienced the encouragements and help from the medical students even from the beginning. Till 1980, my service was only a one-man effort. I got a great inspiration from Dr. Kalyani, Pharmacology Professor, from her prayer-filled life and zeal to help the poor. In 1980 after confirming my job there, I began to nurse the sick in Ward II where the biggest number of accident-cases were registered. I did this service not only during my duty time but when I was on off-duty also. When this became a part of my routine, some began to criticise me and on the one hand others started to support my work; and several people came forward offering meals for distributing among the helpless". Thomaschettan, a humble man by nature, has always followed the humanitarian principles right from his childhood. He puts the need of the poor people ahead of his own.

The Navajeevan Food Ministry

Thomaschettan decided to collect food packets from the surrounding villages and to distribute them at free of cost in the evening at the Medical college Campus and many were attracted by this great humanitarian act of feeding the helpless and poor patients. Generous helpers came forward offering their service and encouraging his work. A good number of youngsters like Mr. Anup Panjikaran, Mr. Regimon, Mr. Saji etc., soon became available and it helped a lot to grow the free feeding project. Instead of collecting food from different quarters, they introduced a cash-pooling-system and began to prepare food for distributing among the patients and their relatives.

With the grace of God, Navajeevan now cooks all the food (rice, three type curries and boiled drinking water) in their own kitchen and feeds about 3000 poor patients and their relatives at the three major hospitals of Kottayam (the medical college hospital, the TB centre at the Kottayam District Hospital, and the Children's Hospital) at free of cost.

Navajeevan Bhavan
Navajeevan Bhavan at Panambalam, (Villunni P. O., Kottayam - 686 008) near to Kottayam Town is both the head Office of the Navajeevan Trust and a destitute home for mentally challenged patients of both genders. At present there are 210 mentally deranged persons from all over India belonging to different castes and creeds being cared at the Trust's campus. They provide food, shelter, clothing, care and medication to these patients. Some of them have to be locked behind bars during most of the day. The transformation of them after becoming the inmates of the Navajeevan is really amazing. Since 1982 more than 1000 people have been cared for and rehabilitated to their own homes. In addition to this, bed-ridden patients too are taken care of. Now there are 25 bed ridden patients residing at Navajeevan Bhavan.

Volunteers

It will be a great surprise to all of us to hear that the staffs of Navajeevan is only five or six and the rest are volunteers coming from different institutions for a week or ten days. This institution needs about 40 volunteers per day to run its daily functions. We can experience there the selfless service of the nurses, doctors, dentists, priests, deacons, and the normal men and women. They render their service day and night without any remuneration. Some of Navajeevan volunteers are always in the Medical College Hospital to provide service for the abandoned patients. They find out such patients and give all possible help.

Navajeevan Culture
The service style of the Navajeevan has inspired many of the people in South India and not fewer than 27 institutions following this “Navajeevan Culture” started in Kerala itself. The life and service of the Navajeevan is the way of communicating its message to others and the trust does not favour any other methods of publicity. "My desire is that Navajeevan should wade through debts, difficulties and the providence of God," says Thomaschettan. That is why, he politely declined to accept the offer of 75 lakhs of a Canadian Professor and he proclaims his firm belief that the Holy Spirit of God, not a bank balance, is the greatest treasure in the world.

Cost Structure
This trust is running neither on donation from Govt, nor religious bodies, nor with foreign aid, but on the contribution from the public.   Navajeevan needs about Rs. 35,000 Per day to meet its expenses ( for food and medicine).

The expense on food at Navajeevan Bhavan and the other above said institutions for one day is approximately Rs. 17,500/-  

Prayer is the power

In Navajeevan Bhavan, we will experience no anxiety about tomorrow. Today's prayer for tomorrow's needs is its accepted life-style. The throbbing nerve-centre of Navajeevan is nothing but the spacious prayer hall and the regular prayer service and in which people ranging from three-year-olds to the aged support the house and its services through their intercessory prayers. All the inmates and volunteers come together and pray at least five times a day. On Fridays there is fasting prayer from 2 p.m. And on Tuesdays local parishners come and conduct prayer from 6 to 8 p.m.
Thomaschettan firmly believes that it is the Spiritual Renewal sweeping the state that has been instrumental for the change in society and for infusing the spirit of service in the people. Navajeevan gives more importance to service than to organisation of committees. The workers of Navajeevan consider works of mercy as a prayer service not as a social service.

Conclusion
As our society comprises of the poor and the needy people, who deserve our help in every walks of life, the mission perspectives of the Navajeevan trust is greatly valid and a need of the time. To know their great service, to encourage such activities and to follow their examples in our life is nothing but obeying the commandment of our Lord Jesus Christ „ to love your neighbour as yourself“.(St. Mark 12:31)

Christmas Message 2009 Competiton Winners

Prize Winner of the Youth Carol Contest

St. Mary's Youth Choir Vienna won second Prize in the Ecumenical Carol Singing Contest 2009. The Ecumenical Prayer and Carol Singing Programme was orgnized for the Malayalee Pravasi Christians in the Vienna City in order to encourage ecumenical relationships among the Syrian Christians from Kerala and to deepen their indian christian spirituality as well as the Malayalam language. This programme was held at Pfarre Maria Lourdes Meidling, Hasckagasse 5, 1120 Wien on on Sunday 13^th December, 2009 and about 18 teams were participated in the Competition. St.Mary's Youth Association, Vienna participated in A type Competition, which means competition for music without accompaniment. It is the second time that our team in this Competition achieving this prestigious trophy.

Vienna St.Mary's MSO Church got three Prizes in this Competition and First Prize for the Senior Group and First Prize for the Junior Group are the rest of the Winners for Church. Ms. Blessy Mol Ulloorikara, Ms. Sunu Poomkottayil, Ms. Sandra Palpathu, Ms. Claudia Anjeril and Master Nirmal Thuruthummel were the members in our St.Mary's Youth Choir for this Carol Competition.

Pastoral message of the month - December 2009

Holy Night, but a Silent Night?

    In the year 1818, on the eve of the Christmas day, a song heard for the first time in St. Nicholas church, a village church in Oberndorf, near Salzburg, Austria. The assistant priest Rev. Fr. Joseph Mohr and the choir director Franz Xaver Gruber composed a song and sung with the accompaniment of Fr. Mohr’s guitar. There comes into bloom an ever-green carol song, “Silent Night Holy Night” (Stille Nacht Heilige Nacht), which still stands the best amidst the test of the times.

    On that “Holy Night” the Son of God incarnated for the human liberation from clutches of bondages, however, was that night really “Silent Night”? On that night when Christ came down from heaven to earth, the soldiers were running to behead the young babes, while the shepherds were running to kneel down at the manger. On that night, the cries of mothers were echoing around the manger seeing the blood of their babes, on other side the king’s patience was running out due to the birth of the King of Kings.

    Today’s night too, not that silent still, as it was in 2000 years ago. The cries of natural world due to heavy misuse of resources are at its zenith, the cries of starving millions, including babes are too in its heights, due to lack of living avenues. Millions of people are still running, some to save their lives from the destructive forces and destructive weapons, others to meet their both ends and some to grab other’s fortunes to amass wealth. The “cries and runnings” are still flowing without any stubborn hindrance.

    We have come to a juncture, to re-think ourselves in order to qualify our Christian lives in the midst of life-threatening structures of today. The pertinent question I would like to ask in this context is: Can we pose for a moment to have a deliberate thinking over the “Cries and Running” which break the “Silence” amidst “Holiness”? Can we ponder over Christian values in order to bring its essence for wiping out “Cries and Running”?  Can we post Christian Praxis in our lives to transform “Cries and Running” to “Happiness and Peaceful Living”?

   Youth, a vibrant age in our life time, has the strength to act as a catalyst to bring positive changes among the negative forces. Let this year’s “Holy Night” gives an impetus to you all to promote “changes in attitudes” in order to labor for fullness of other’s life too, for Christ’s incarnation rooted in “… have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). Let us strive hard in one accord to bring back that “Celebration of Life” in the Eden Gardens to this Earth Gardens. Let me conclude with Mor Ephrem’s prayer from Hymns on the Nativity 1:95. He sings,

On this day a gift came out to us without asking for it;
let us then give alms to those who cry out and beg from us.

With heartfelt wishes of a joyful and blessed “Holy Night”, let me sum up this “silent thought”.

4th Anniversary Celebration by Youth MSOC Switzerland

This 15th November 2009, we, Syrian Orthodox Youth in Switzerland celebrated our 4th Anniversary, along with our yearly Coffee and delicious foods and the celebration of Children's Day.

After the Holy Qurabana from His Highness Kuriakose Mar Theophilose Thirumeni, we had a Photo section along with all the Parishners who were attending this session. After that, we had prepared delicious Foods for our loving Friends of our Parish with Coffee, Bread, Stew curry in 3 different styles, as well as cakes, chips, biscuits and many more. Above that it was a great pleasure for us, Youth, to celebrate our Vicar’s Birthday. He was surprised and happy to see us bringing a big cake for him.

After the Food, our new bearers of Youth, Ms. Jasmin, Ms. Tijitha and Mr. Jeevan lead the Children’s Day Programs. For Sunday School kids, there were different games like Musical Chair, Spoon race, Frog jumping, "Jesus" says game and Sweets picking. For Youth, there were Musical Chair and Lemon spoon race.

It was a great fun and motivation for all of us. It was a wonderful experience and time of joy. Thereafter we invited our beloved Thirumeni to give us some precious words and to hand over the prizes to all the winners.
