Although the least in terms of the number of days of fast, the "Nineveh Nombu" is one of the most important fasts in the Syrian Orthodox Church tradition. Fasting is meant to be a sign of our giving up of our ego or `selves' for the sake of others. They are, in other words, occasions of self-emptying or `kenosis' of which the supreme example is Jesus Christ himself (Phil.2). Prayer and fasting are two cardinal corner stones of a Christian life. The what , the why and the how of prayer and fasting are clearly explicated in the Sermon on the Mount (Mt.6). Prophet Isaiah brings home to us the concrete manifestation of a genuine spiritual life, itself rooted in prayer and fasting.
Exposing the hypocrisy and the pseudo-spirituality of the people of his time, the prophet challenges them to observe lent and fasting the way God wants them to observe it:
Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight
And to strike with a wicked fist
Such fasting as you do today
Will not make your voice heard on High
Is such the fast that I choose
A day to humble oneself?
Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush
And to lie down in sackcloth and ashes?
Will you call this a fast
A day acceptable to the LORD?
Is not this the fast that I choose
To loose the bonds of injustice
To undo the thongs of yoke
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry
And bring the homeless to your house
………(Is.58:4-7)
Fasting is an occasion for us to live through the pain of poverty and starvation. For most of us, fasting has become an easy option of `dieting', which many of us do need to shed the extra kilos that gain, given that we all live in a consumerist society such as today's. As my own spiritual guru, the late lamented Yakoob Mar Themotheose thirumeni, taught me, fasting should enable us to feel the pain of hunger, which, in turn, will make us compassionate to the poor and the hungry. Unfortunately, we have lost this dimension of serving the poor some where along the lines. May this time of "Moonu Nombu" be a time for us to reclaim and recover this lost sense of charity and compassion towards the less privileged and the needy among us.
The story of Jonah has many lessons for us. Let me highlight just one of them here. All human beings have some sense of pride and ego within themselves- a false sense of prestige. Prophets were no exception to this rule- Jonah certainly wasn't one. He knew that his obeying God's commandment to preach in Nineveh had some risks involved with it. He knew quite well that his God was a compassionate God. He was asked to bring the message of God's anger and wrath onto the people of Nineveh. He knew that when people would regret their ways of living and return to the LORD, they would be forgiven and redeemed. It happened exactly the way he `feared'. For Jonah it was a matter of great disappointment.
His ego was hurt, his `name' affected and pride shaken. He wanted God to punish the people as he had prophesied so that `his' words would come true. But God thinks and acts beyond our perceptions and calculations. Jonah was much more concerned about his prophecy being fulfilled than God's compassion towards the people and their welfare. It is a clear case where even prophets get their priorities wrong. This, in fact, is a grave temptation for all of us, especially for those who work in the vineyard of the LORD- a desire to keep our `selves' in tact, to get our predictions right, even at the cost of the ruin of others around us. We should always strive for the wellbeing of others even if it comes at the expense of our pride and name.
This is the challenge of all feasts, especially the Nineveh Nombu, to risk ourselves for the sake of the gospel and Christ, particularly for the poor and the downtrodden in whom Christ can be encountered in our daily lives.
May God have mercy upon us, be gracious to us, and accept the fast of the Holy Church, as HE accepted the fast of the people of Nineveh and spared them.

Three Days Fast of Nineveh ( 25 - 28 Jan 2010)
Our "Fast of Nineveh" or "Jonah's Fast" begins today and ends on 28th (Thursday) January, 2010. The three day fast of Nineveh commemorates the three days that Prophet Jonah spent inside the fish (for the story, see the Book of Jonah in the Old Testament). This fast is unique to the Syriac Orthodox Church which it passed to other Oriental Churches such as Coptic and Armenian. It is observed for three days from the tenth Monday before Easter Sunday.
The "Fast of Nineveh" or "Jonah's Fast" comprises three days of fasting, followed by the Feast of Jonah itself. This liturgical celebration of our Church is set just a few days after Epiphany and two weeks before Great Lent. The Church's positioning the fast in this liturgical sequence has a mystical significance. During the service of Matins on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of that week, the entire Book of Jonah is read. Why indeed should the Church devote so much attention to such a short book written by such an obscure prophet? (In fact, all we know about Jonah himself comes just from his book and a single reference to him in 2Kings 14:25.) Succinctly put, the Church sees within this book's simple story an icon of Christ symbolically represented.
How could such a "cute" story about an unwilling prophet who gets swallowed by a fish when he tries to escape doing God's will carry such a profound meaning? Unlike other prophetic books, the Book of Jonah does not contain "words of prophecy," as such, but rather it tells a tale of Jonah's personal encounter with the Lord. Using a story motif, Jonah's prophecy speaks to us not with words but with symbols. Reading these symbols spiritually, we behold the mystery of salvation in Christ exemplified in imagistic types. Indeed, it is no wonder that this book also portrays a unique instance in the Old Testament of God's love and concern not just for His own people, Israel, but for a nation of Gentiles who were actually Israel's enemies. Here again we find an archetype of Christ's mission of salvation extending beyond Israel to embrace the whole world, all the enemies of God.
Historically, this fast is one of the most rigorously observed fasts in the Syriac Orthodox Church. The faithful traditionally refrain from food and drink for three consecutive days, from Monday till Wednesday! Some observe the fast by refraining from food (and drink if they so wish) from morning till sunset during the three days. The church enjoins you to at least refrain from meat, fish and dairy products during the period of fasting.
The faithful are urged to go to church after this fast (or the following Sunday) and receive the Holy Qurbono (the Eucharist).

The Mayonnaise Jar and 2 cups of coffee
PLEASE READ TO FIND THE MORAL OF THE STORY
- The Mayonnaise Jar and 2 cups of coffee -
When things in your life seem, Almost too much to handle,
When 24 Hours in a day is not enough,
....Remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.
When the class began, wordlessly,
He picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar
And proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students, if the jar was full... they agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured
them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full... They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand
And poured it into the jar.. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
When the class began, wordlessly,
He picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar
And proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students, if the jar was full... they agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured
them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full... They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand
And poured it into the jar.. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous 'yes.'
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.
The students laughed.
'Now,' said the professor, As the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life..
The golf balls are the important things - God, family, children, health, friends, and favorite passions – Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter Like your job, house, and car.
The sand is everything else -- The small stuff.
'If you put the sand into the jar first,' He continued,
'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life..
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff,
You will never have room for the things that are
Important to you..
So...
Pay attention to the things That are critical to your happiness.
Playwith your children.
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner.
There will always be time
To clean the house and fix the disposal.
'Take care of the golf balls first --
The things that really matter.
Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.'
One of the students raised her hand
And inquired what the coffee represented.
The professor smiled.
'I'm glad you asked'.
It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,
there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.'

Please keep praying... for Haiti
Heavenly Father, I want to say THANK YOU,
... because this morning I woke up and knew
where my children were;
because this morning my home was still standing,
because this morning I was able to drink a glass of water,
because this morning I was able to turn on the light,
because this morning I was able to take a shower,
because this morning I am not crying for my husband, my child,
my brother or sister buried underneath a pile of concrete,
because this morning I was not planning a funeral,
.... but most of all I thank you this morning
because I still have life and a voice to cry out for the people of Haiti.
Lord I cry out to You,
the One that makes the impossible...possible,
the One that turns darkness in to light.
I cry out that You give those mothers strength,
that You give them peace that surpasses all understanding.
that You may open the streets so that help can come,
that You may provide doctors, nurses, relief workers,
food, water, and all that they need in a blink of an eye.
For all those that have lost family members ....
give them peace,
give them hope,
give them courage to continue to go on!
Protect the children, the widows, the sick, the old ... and shield them with your power.
I pray all this in the most precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ!!!
..because we here are truly blessed!

Navajeevan Trust - Kottayam
Searching for an innovative way of spiritual orientation, Vienna St. Mary's MSO Youths visited Navajeevan Trust at Kottayam, Kerala on the day after Christmas, 26th December, 2009 and made an interview with Mr. P. U. Thomas, the founder of Navajeevan, and with many of his colleagues and volunteers of the trust. It provided us a golden chance to understand and to take part in their miraculous ministry of the social service following the words of Jesus Christ and helped us to broaden our vision of spirituality itself.
Navajeevan (the word means „New Life“), is a place for the destitute and mentally challenged, people. The ministry provides them with food, clothing accommodation and also provides support to patients who are too poor to afford their hospital expenses. The Navajeevan Trust has been founded in 1990 and Mr. P.U. Thomas, a Class IV attendant of the Kottayam Medical College, is the founder and main trustee of the trust.
Mr. P. U. Thomas (The man behind Navajeevan initiative)
Mr. P. U. Thomas, (known as Thomaschettan for the inhabitants and well-wishers of Navajeevan) is the eldest son of Mr. Oani and Mrs. Annamma and had been working as an attendant at the Kottayam Medical College since 1970. He understood the pathetic condition of the poor and the helpless in the Medical College when he was admitted there with a severe abdominal pain at the age of 18. In 1970 he became an attendant at Medical college Hospital Kottayam and it paved the way for him to serve the poor, needy and sick people. He set aside a sum of money for medicine, and food for the poor patients from his meagre amount of salary. Thomaschetten himself narrates the origin and development of his ministry as follows: "If I get a job in a medical college, I will do a lot of good things to the poor. This was my prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary. From 1970 January onwards I have been going to the hospital to visit and nurse the sick. I experienced the encouragements and help from the medical students even from the beginning. Till 1980, my service was only a one-man effort. I got a great inspiration from Dr. Kalyani, Pharmacology Professor, from her prayer-filled life and zeal to help the poor. In 1980 after confirming my job there, I began to nurse the sick in Ward II where the biggest number of accident-cases were registered. I did this service not only during my duty time but when I was on off-duty also. When this became a part of my routine, some began to criticise me and on the one hand others started to support my work; and several people came forward offering meals for distributing among the helpless". Thomaschettan, a humble man by nature, has always followed the humanitarian principles right from his childhood. He puts the need of the poor people ahead of his own.
The Navajeevan Food Ministry
Thomaschettan decided to collect food packets from the surrounding villages and to distribute them at free of cost in the evening at the Medical college Campus and many were attracted by this great humanitarian act of feeding the helpless and poor patients. Generous helpers came forward offering their service and encouraging his work. A good number of youngsters like Mr. Anup Panjikaran, Mr. Regimon, Mr. Saji etc., soon became available and it helped a lot to grow the free feeding project. Instead of collecting food from different quarters, they introduced a cash-pooling-system and began to prepare food for distributing among the patients and their relatives.
With the grace of God, Navajeevan now cooks all the food (rice, three type curries and boiled drinking water) in their own kitchen and feeds about 3000 poor patients and their relatives at the three major hospitals of Kottayam (the medical college hospital, the TB centre at the Kottayam District Hospital, and the Children's Hospital) at free of cost.
Navajeevan Bhavan
Navajeevan Bhavan at Panambalam, (Villunni P. O., Kottayam - 686 008) near to Kottayam Town is both the head Office of the Navajeevan Trust and a destitute home for mentally challenged patients of both genders. At present there are 210 mentally deranged persons from all over India belonging to different castes and creeds being cared at the Trust's campus. They provide food, shelter, clothing, care and medication to these patients. Some of them have to be locked behind bars during most of the day. The transformation of them after becoming the inmates of the Navajeevan is really amazing. Since 1982 more than 1000 people have been cared for and rehabilitated to their own homes. In addition to this, bed-ridden patients too are taken care of. Now there are 25 bed ridden patients residing at Navajeevan Bhavan.

It will be a great surprise to all of us to hear that the staffs of Navajeevan is only five or six and the rest are volunteers coming from different institutions for a week or ten days. This institution needs about 40 volunteers per day to run its daily functions. We can experience there the selfless service of the nurses, doctors, dentists, priests, deacons, and the normal men and women. They render their service day and night without any remuneration. Some of Navajeevan volunteers are always in the Medical College Hospital to provide service for the abandoned patients. They find out such patients and give all possible help.

That is why, he politely declined to accept the offer of 75 lakhs of a Canadian Professor and he proclaims his firm belief that the Holy Spirit of God, not a bank balance, is the greatest treasure in the world.

This trust is running neither on donation from Govt, nor religious bodies, nor with foreign aid, but on the contribution from the public. Navajeevan needs about Rs. 35,000 Per day to meet its expenses ( for food and medicine).

Prayer is the power
In Navajeevan Bhavan, we will experience no anxiety about tomorrow. Today's prayer for tomorrow's needs is its accepted life-style. The throbbing nerve-centre of Navajeevan is nothing but the spacious prayer hall and the regular prayer service and in which people ranging from three-year-olds to the aged support the house and its services through their intercessory prayers. All the inmates and volunteers come together and pray at least five times a day. On Fridays there is fasting prayer from 2 p.m. And on Tuesdays local parishners come and conduct prayer from 6 to 8 p.m.
Thomaschettan firmly believes that it is the Spiritual Renewal sweeping the state that has been instrumental for the change in society and for infusing the spirit of service in the people. Navajeevan gives more importance to service than to organisation of committees. The workers of Navajeevan consider works of mercy as a prayer service not as a social service.

Conclusion
As our society comprises of the poor and the needy people, who deserve our help in every walks of life, the mission perspectives of the Navajeevan trust is greatly valid and a need of the time. To know their great service, to encourage such activities and to follow their examples in our life is nothing but obeying the commandment of our Lord Jesus Christ „ to love your neighbour as yourself“.(St. Mark 12:31)

GIVEUP REVENGE TO SERVE POOR..
Constable Ittiyaveera died from the bullets of Dhanashekaran, leaving behind his wife and three children. It was the first incident in Kerala police station where a policeman was shot by the culprit. “ I will kill Dhanashekaran” was the only diary note of victim’s son. Today the son is not Zakharia but Fr. Zakharia. He demonstrated the path of goodness to the world instead of the unholy path of revenge.
The life of Fr. Zakharia Therambil, the vicar of Mar. Gregorios Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church Thiruvanchiyoor, has turned to spirituality after having gone through the path of communist ideology and the thoughts of revenge. As a teenager and later as an young man his mind was full of communism and theories of Evolutions. The thoughts of revenge to kill his fathers murderer followed. Soon Zakharias visualized the crucified figure of the Christ, the most merciful lord, enlightened Zakhria’s mind.
Reckless Teenage
Zakharia, the youngest son of Ittiyaveera and Thankamma wasn’t a believer to start with. Ittiyaveera, a head constable, was a man of principles and was against bribery and dishonesty. Zakharia was taken to communism in his schooldays. Later he joined St.Marys college, Manarkad. For the pre-degree course. He was forced to leave the college due to his rebellious attitude. Zakharia says that it happened as a result of misunderstanding by the college authorities. His father didn’t persuade his son to apologise and go back to college. He continued his education privately.
The Day Life Changed.
Zakharia was at his home when he heard that his father was shot, on 8 January 1989.

Ittiyaveera died at Kottayam medical college after a six hour long surgery at 11 pm, leaving behind his innocent wife and school going children. Today fr. Zakharia laughs while reading his diary note, “I will kill Dhanashekaran”.
It was his intention to find and kill him who escaped jail soon after the arrest.A lot of well wishers came forward to help the family, that shattered mentally and financially. The colleagues of Ittiyaveera- V R Rajeevan [S.P], ASP Sreelekha, Alphonse Kannanthanam [ District collector], sympathetically helped the family of their respectable and principle minded Ittiyaveera. Still the thoughts of revenge didn’t subside in Zakharia’s mind. While at the Baselios college his mind gradually changed. Zacharia believes that it was by the intervention of God. It started during a short stay on the street, on his way back home fro college. He listened to Rev. Fr. Mathew Naickamparambil who was conducting a camp at Nagambalam, sponsored by Muringoor retreat centre. It was incredible to believe the change of Zakharia towards spirituality that he refused to accept before.
The condition of his family worsened because of the falling rubber prices and difficulty in paying home loan. By God’s grace his elder brother Kurian managed to secure a job in village office soon relieving the family burden. Zakharia doesn’t remember the time he thought of priesthood. Anxiety and difficulty in decsision making followed regarding future course in life. By this time he completed his degree at the university. He wrote a long letter describing the situation to Prof. of Economics- P C Elias. It was the reply of this letter that initiated Zakharia to become Fr. Zakharia. The reply said “I expect my students of the batch will reach great heights. Zakharia is one among them. I pray that you become a priest showering the light of divinity to many”.
With The Poor And Needy
Zakharia started visiting the patients of medical college Kottayam after joining the Navajeevan trust. He continued his sympathy and compassion to them after becoming the priest as well. His vicariate started at the St. George church at Valayadi in the high range. He reached there at a time when the factories where closed and people were jobless and starving. He started collection of food from Kottayam and distributing to them.
It was liquor addiction of the villagers that made him to start a retreat centre there. He could liberate many from alchoholism and drugs. In 2003 he reached Thoothutty Mar Gregorios church. He started a retreat centre here also. Selecting a hundred poverty striken family in the area he arranged to provide three kilogram rice every week to them. It was his brain behind the construction of ten houses to the homeless in this area.
His compassion and sympathy to the sick made him to join Pain and Palliative Care Unit. Centered at the church, 25 volunteers and over hundred patients seek advice and treatment. He drove for the first time an ambulance to Kottayam medical college and saved the life of person who met with accident at Thoothutty. Fr. Zakhariah, opting celibacy, destined to serve the poor until death. Like Pope John Paul II he too has no personal bank account.

His Holiness the Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas approved the recommendation of the Holy Synod of Malankara, the name of Rev. Fr. Zacharia T. I, Mor Gregorian Centre Thoothootty, Kottayam as bishop for Malabar Diocese. On 4th January 2009, the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church consecrated him at a pious but auspicious ceremony held at the St. Athanasius Cathedral in the Malankara Syrian Church headquarters, Puthencuriz.
